Plasticizers are an integral part of PVC product formulations
PVC tends to be polar and non-polar in terms of chemical compatibility. This makes it compatible with a wide range of oils and softeners and allows the production of soft parts based on this popular plastic. In fact, plasticizer, which translates as Plasticiser and is also called plasticizer in traditional markets, is an integral part of soft PVC product formulations. By the softeners, PVC can be produced with a hardness of 20 Shore A and higher. So far, different generations of emollients have been commercialized. In this section, we decide to get acquainted with the new world of emollients. Experienced players in the PVC compounding industry remember the use of diesel as a softener for PVC products. Leaving aside these misuse, phthalates are the first chemical group to be used as plasticizers in PVC mixers. Then, in order to control the rate of softener migration to the surface and to engineer different properties, phthalates with different molecular weights were introduced to the market. DOP (Dioctyl Phthalate) is the most famous member of the phthalate softener family. It did not take long for phthalates to be identified as having health and environmental hazards. For this reason, the use of emollients such as BBP (Benzyl Butyl Phthalate), DBP (Dibutyl Phthalate), DEHP (Diethyl Hexyl Phthalate) and DOP in some countries soon faced restrictions for industries such as food and health products. It should be borne in mind that the reasonable cost and excellent emollient performance of this family has made it impossible to remove them quickly. Also, in some applications, the permissible range of phthalates allows the use of these emollients. Higher molecular weight phthalates such as DOTP (Dioctyl Terephthalate) have a wider range of applications and pose fewer hazards to the end user due to their higher molecular weight. Efforts are also being made to commercialize PVC-compatible softener oils from renewable sources. In conclusion, we can say that the development of plasticizers is towards higher molecular weight and low risk to human health, and of course the use of renewable resources in order to pay attention to the sustainable development of industries.
